What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a common, chronic skin condition that is the result of a rapid buildup of skin cells. This causes red, raised, dry, scaly patches, even blisters, to form on the skin. Sometimes, psoriasis affects the fingernails, causing yellowing and small depressions. Psoriasis can range from mild to severe, and in most cases, causes itching and burning.

In the United States, more than seven million people have psoriasis. Although there is no cure, Dr. Valerie Callender offers laser treatment for this skin condition.

What Causes Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is caused by an immune-system disorder that involves a white blood cell, called a T cell.  T cells usually travel through the body to fight off viruses and other foreign substances. In patients with psoriasis, the T cells will attack healthy skin cells. This leads to an overproduction of healthy skin cells, which then build up on the surface of the skin. This cases the scaling and patches of psoriasis.

Symptoms of psoriasis can worsen due to certain triggers, including:

• Infections
• Injury to the skin
• Stress
• Smoking
• Alcohol
• Certain medicines

What are the Benefits of treating psoriasis with Lasers?

Unlike topical creams, the laser treatment does not require daily maintenance. Many patients enjoy several months of treatment-free remission after completing laser sessions. The laser treatments are painless and are quick! Many patients only need 4 to 6 weeks of treatments, as opposed to 30 or more phototherapy booth sessions.

The laser may have fewer shortcomings than many common psoriasis treatments. Ultraviolet light exposure to healthy skin is limited which may reduce the risk of premature skin aging associated with alternative methods. There is no thinning of the skin, easy bruising, or stretch marks. There also are also minimal side effects compared to other treatments and oral medications.

Laser Psoriasis Treatment

The laser treatment will take place in Dr. Callender’s office. After determining the best dosage for the patient, Dr. Callender will place the handpiece directly on the psoriasis plaques. The laser therapy is applied. Patients will hear a gentle hum and a blue colored light from the handpiece. Treatment only takes a few minutes.

There is no pain or discomfort during treatment. Patients may feel slight warmth shortly after treatment, which is mild and short-lived. No anesthesia is necessary.

How Many Laser Treatments Will I Need To Treat Psoriasis?

Dr. Callender will create a course of therapy custom to the patient. The amount of therapy sessions depends on the extent, thickness, and location of the psoriasis. Many patients need 10 or fewer sessions.
