Neuromodulator injections: Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin

Dermal Fillers | Callender Dermatology Fine lines, wrinkles, and folds that develop after the age of 30 are often a sign of aging skin. As the skin loses its elasticity from collagen reduction, it becomes more susceptible to these concerns. In the past, the only way to reduce these wrinkles and folds was to undergo invasive plastic surgeries. Luckily, men and women today have many more options available to them for consideration, including neuromodulator injections such as Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin.

What is a neuromodulator?

A neuromodulator is a medication that can be injected into the muscles of the face to reduce muscle contractions. In doing this, patients will be able to target dynamic wrinkles caused by facial muscles, treating crow’s feet, glabellar lines, and horizontal forehead folds. The neuromodulator is formulated with an ingredient that keeps the muscles from tightening, therefore smoothing the skin above.

Which one is right for me?

Each neuromodulator has its benefits and downfalls. One of the most popular options is Botox. Botox has been on the market for many years and is also used in the treatment of many medical concerns including hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), overactive bladder, and chronic headaches and migraines. The tension caused by muscles in the face result in the formation of dynamic wrinkles that are easily treated with neuromodulators. During a consultation appointment with Dr. Valerie Callender of Glenn Dale, MD, she will assess a patient’s desires and determine which injectable is best.

What about dermal fillers?

Other injectables that can be used alongside with neuromodulators are called dermal fillers. These are gels of hyaluronic acid that can immediately fill wrinkles and folds of the face. Some patients choose to combine neuromodulators with dermal fillers to achieve dramatic results and natural improvements. Our team can discuss the possibility of multiple injectables to get the youthful skin patient’s dream of recovering!
