What to Know About Hair Loss In Women

Hair Loss Glenn Dale MDWhen it comes to being a woman, there is nothing that can make you feel quite as sexy as your hair. Whether you prefer to wear your hair really short or really long, your hair can say so much about who you are and your personality. If you have started to experience some hair loss, you may be at a loss for something else: words.

As one of the things that we treat patients for at our office, we thought it might be helpful and reassuring to create a list of a few things for you to know about female hair loss.

It’s Fairly Common

Although you may think that hair loss among women isn’t common, it actually isn’t as uncommon as you may think. Although men are more likely to experience balding, about 30 million women suffer from some form of hair loss in America. Which means that you may not be quite as alone as you initially thought.

There Are Varying Degrees

Believe it or not, there are varying degrees of hair loss. Some women experience a slight amount of hair loss postpartum, whereas other women experience a significant amount of hair loss later on in life. As soon as you start to notice your hair thinning, that’s when you should come into our office for a consultation because like with most things, it’s easier to treat hair loss at the beginning stages rather than when it’s worse.

Female Pattern Hair Loss Is Usually the Cause

Even though hormones, stress, anxiety, and a bunch of other things can contribute to hair loss, the most common cause is called Female Pattern Hair Loss or FPHL, which tends to be hereditary. If your mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, or any other close female relative has FPHL, then you may be at a higher risk of getting it than other individuals.

Nothing can make your self-esteem suffer quite like hair loss. Here at our office, we offer both surgical and nonsurgical hair restorative treatments. If you want to learn a little bit more about our procedures, contact our Glenn Dale office today and call us at 301.249.0970.
