Tips for Summer Tattoo Removal

If you have fantasies of getting rid of that matching tattoo you and with your high school boyfriend or if you want to get rid of that tramp stamp, then laser tattoo removal can do just the trick. But now that it’s summer, recovery is a little bit more complicated. Let’s take a closer look at a few ways that you can get rid of your tattoo safely during the summer.

Avoid Water

Summer wouldn’t be summer unless you went swimming, right? Although swimming is a great workout and something fun to do with friends and family, be careful after you get laser tattoo removal. After treatment, your skin will be extra susceptible to germs and bacteria (both of which are in any water). Also, if you soak your skin in water for too long, it can slow down healing time. Our advice? Wait a week or two (until after it’s healed) until you go for a swim.

Lather on the Sunscreen

We are realists here at our office, and we know that it’s impossible to ask our patients to stay 100% inside after getting laser tattoo removal. But, you should be careful when you are in the sun. Try to avoid laying out in the direct sun as much as possible and if you’re going on a walk outside or even driving for long periods in the car, make sure that you lather up with a broad spectrum sunscreen.

Avoid Tanning

Tanning in a tanning bed and tanning out by the pool are two things that you need to avoid during the summer (or anytime). Sun exposure puts you at risk of developing skin cancer, getting premature fine lines and wries. And it can damage your skin after laser tattoo removal. Think of your skin this way: after laser hair removal it will be raw and sensitive. If you lay out in the sun or a tanning bed, you are putting your skin at risk of severe scarring and blistering. Our advice? Avoid it completely.

Getting a tattoo removed during the summer is possible, but it also requires a little bit more effort on your end. Let us help you get rid of your bad memories (and your tattoo) and schedule your appointment at our Glenn Dale office at 301.249.0970.
